Background
The idea for ChangeEducate stems from our work with Discover Worlds (DW), an entirely student-run non-profit organization that has addressed this issue of poverty for the past five years.
- What They’ve Done: DW innovatively sends trained (student) speakers to various youth gatherings, including high schools, leadership conferences, youth groups, and more. The organization motivates and empowers other youths by showing how they can use their talents and passions to create their own sustainable poverty-ending projects. Comprehensive support and resources are provided for the student leaders who want to execute projects after being inspired by the presentations.
- Their Impact: The methods of student-led motivation and resources that DW uses have been demonstrated to work in very diverse communities. There are over 60 chapters who have used a grassroots initiative to take action. Some examples of this success include: Rwandan students who host an educational sister-school program with the U.S.; Kolkata students who designed and now implement a successful hygiene and literacy program for slums in India; and U.S. students who sponsor university education for orphans and utilize web exchanges for leadership and occupational training.
- Our Opportunity: DW is limited by the number of presentation that can be made, and the number of places to which speakers can be sent. For that reason, we seek to create a more sustainable and replicable way to maximize the positive impact of DW. The message and poverty education that DW currently provides can be brought to high schools through an educational DVD, accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum and a lesson plan, which would allow our program to be replicated and the Discover Worlds’ message to reach students across the United States. This initiative is ChangeEducate.
- Utilizing DW: The crux of our project is the methodology we are sharing with the students who are watching the DVD. We are utilizing the proved methodology of DW, which has been motivating students to become social entrepreneurs to alleviate poverty for years.
